Wasabi Systems announces NetBSD support for the AMD OpteronT processor

In April, Wasabi Systems announced NetBSD support for the AMD OpteronT processor. The new port of NetBSD, which has been 64-bit clean since 1995, was completed as part of a collaboration between AMD (NYSE: AMD) and Wasabi.

"With the AMD64 architecture, the AMD Opteron processor is poised to become a leader in 64-bit computing," said Frank G. Logan, III, CEO of Wasabi Systems. "And NetBSD has an outstanding 64-bit track record. We look forward to supporting NetBSD on the AMD Opteron processor for our mutual customers."

NetBSD has become widely used in the advanced networked storage markets because of its premium-grade TCP/IP implementation, ease of portability, and business-friendly licensing terms. Because the AMD Opteron processor supports simultaneous 32-bit and 64-bit computing, it allows for smooth transitions to 64-bit computing making it is a hardware platform well positioned for server and storage applications where a smooth 64-bit transition path is critical.

"AMD collaborated with Wasabi Systems to develop an AMD64-compatible version of the NetBSD operating system for solutions based on AMD Opteron processors, delivering customers native support for both 32- and 64-bit NetBSD applications," said Rich Heye, vice president and general manager of AMD's Microprocessor Business Unit. "Customers will be able to optimize 32-bit application performance, and will have the ability to migrate to the power of 64-bit computing as needed."
